Sometimes a piece of chocolate cake, a brownie, a bowl of ice cream sure does taste great! Sometimes just the thought of greasy fried chicken, McDonald’s french fries, and a tasty burger makes your mouth water. The super bad news…. those fatty foods taste great, but are no where near good for you–especially if we consume them on a regular basis.
But not all “fatty” foods, are bad for us. In fact, our bodies need fat in order to maintain good health. It protects our organs, and it keeps our skin soft. When we need a burst of extra energy, it’s a great source of strength and power. Good fats are even beneficial in lowering cholesterol and reducing our chances of heart disease.
If you’re trying to lose weight or lead a healthier lifestyle, you need to be able to tell the good fats from the bad ones.
Which fats are good for us?
Those that are either monounsaturated or polyunsaturated.
Monounsaturated fats decrease cholesterol. They are also believed to decrease the risk of some kinds of cancer. How can you get your daily dose of monounsaturated fats? Eat olives, avocados, nuts, and seeds. These foods are usually rich in Vitamin E as well.
Like Omega 3, polyunsaturated fats are in seafood and vegetable oil. They aid in the reduction of cholesterol. They’re also one of the reasons fish is such a great addition to anyone’s diet. It’s high in protein, low in calories, and full of fat that’s good for you.
Although foods rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good for us, if we eat too much of them, they can make us … well, fat. Just like saturated fats, they contain nine calories per gram. Protein and carbohydrates contain only four calories per gram. Clearly, if you want to lose weight—or avoid gaining it—you shouldn’t gorge on nuts and olives!
