insanity-max-interval-circuit-smInsanity is a 60 day program, the first 4 weeks are Insane.  Then you have a 6 day recovery week.  Then you have another 4 weeks.  If the other Max workouts are as challenging as this one, then the last 4 weeks will be CRAZY Insane.  At the end of 59 minutes, my heart rate monitor showed a total of 921 calories burned.  In the last several years, I have never seen that high of a number after a Beachbody workout.  When Beachbody says that this is the hardest DVD fitness program to date.  They were serious.  At the beginning of this workout, Shaun T says “I’m gonna kick your butt!”  He was serious too.  :)

Insanity Review: Max Interval Circuit

The entire workout is 59 minutes.  Here is a brief lay out of the workout.

Beginning with the warm up, which lasts approximately 10 minutes.  The warm up consists of 3 rounds.  The first two rounds are 4 minutes each, and the last round is  2 minutes.  The last round has the same exercises as the first two, you just perform a faster/shorter duration.  The last round is as fast as you can go.  The exercises are:

  • Jog
  • Jumping Jacks – Arms Up
  • 123 Heisman
  • Jump Rope S-S
  • High Knees – Arms Out
  • Switch Kicks
  • Hit the Floor
  • S-S Floor Hops

At the end of the warm up you get a 30 second water break.  The water break is followed by a good stretch, which lasts approximately 5 minutes.  This is followed by another 30 second water break, and then you cross over into the point of no return!

At this point in the workout, 43 minutes and 30 seconds is the clock.  Now let me throw in a quick mental check for you.  When you first turn on DVD, you see that 59 minutes, and you think, “Oh no! Are you kidding me?”  But shake that off.  Get through the warm up and stretch, and then tell yourself, you have 43 minutes left.  You’ve been doing Insanity for 6 weeks, and your workouts have been 40+ minutes.  You can do this! Yes, its going to be harder, yes it’s longer.  But you managed to get through the first workouts.  So I know we will get through this too.  Now as I type this, my legs are SCREAMING at me.  But I’m committed, no backing out now.  We got this.  Stay with me!  Together we can tackle this challenge!

Here we go.  Your first set of exercises consists of 3 rounds.  Each round has the same 4 moves.  The first round is 4 minutes.  The second round is 3 minutes.  And the 3rd round is 3 minutes, but at the end of the 3rd round only, you get a 1 minute bonus move.  So it’s more like 4-3-4.  The exercises are:

  • Pedal/Power Lunges (Sprint in place, followed by deep lunges).
  • Ski Abs /Jacks/In & Out/Oblique ( Start in plank position, jump side to side for ski abs, then push ups, jump in and out in plank position, and finally alternating your knees to your elbows for obliques. 4 reps each position).
  • Power Strike (Lunge on the left side, 2 punches downward, lunge right side, 2 punches downward, etc).
  • Frog Jumps

Between each round you get a 30-40 second water break.  After the 3rd round, you have 1 minute of Football Runs/ Cross Jacks.

The second set of exercises also consists of 3 rounds.  Like the first set of exercises, each round consists of 4 moves.  The first round is 4 minutes, the second two are 3 minutes each.  After the 3rd round there is a 1 minute bonus move.  After the 3rd round only.  The exercises are:

  • Hook Jumps. (4 hook punches high, 4 hook punches low, 4 high jumps.  Then you switch sides).
  • High Knees with Twist. (As you run with High Knees, you bring your elbows down on each side).
  • High-Low Jab with Squat.  (Jumping high and punching to the side, punch low as you lan in a squat).
  • Floor Switch Kicks. (You just have to see this one). :)

Between each round you get a 30-40 second water break.  After the 3rd round, you have 1 minute of 1-2-3 Jab Across (Side jumps with a punch to each side).

The final set of exercises.  (YEAH!)  3 rounds, same 4 moves.  This time there is NOT a bonus move.  The first round is approximately 4 minutes, followed by two 3 minute rounds.

  • Side Suicide Jumps. (From standing position, place your hands on the floor, jump to the left side.  Stand up, repeat on the right).
  • Squat Hooks. (Squat and hook punch, alternating hands).
  • Full Body Drill. (From standing position, drop to the plank position, run in place 8 times, walking push ups, then 8 wide knee, running in place).
  • Plank Punches.  (In a plank position, alternating hands, punch straight out).

At this concludes the workout!  You take a 30 second water break, and about a 3 minute cool down.  When the timer hits zero, you know without a DOUBT that you have accomplished something!  Specifically, you accomplished burning calories!  You accomplished burning some of that goo, we all are working so hard at removing, or keeping to a minimum.  And best of all, you have taken another step closer to finishing this program, and building your cardiovascular system.  Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone, and into a place not many of your friends and family have ventured.  You are doing what many could NOT do.  Be proud of yourself! See ya next time!!  Thanks for reading this Insanity Review, and be sure to check out all of the Insanity Reviews here.

I love your reviews and your articles! I am doing a insanity and one on one hybrid which is monstrous! I have insanity and have done almost all the workouts except max cardio conditioning! can you review that I want to know how the workout is so I can fit it in my schedule thanks YOu are doing great keep pushing play !

  2. Robert Harden

Thank you! I plan on doing a 1on1 and Insanity hybrid myself, as soon as I finish up the 60 day rotation of Insanity. I will try to do the Cardio Conditioning next. :)

  3. Parkatola

Robert, thanks for the great reviews. I did a round of Insanity last fall, but had to cut it short for health reasons. (Two weeks from being done – stopping at that point was harder than the prior 7 weeks!) Did you do a review of the Max Recovery workout? I can’t see it if you did. I’d love to see your thoughts on the “right heel up, left heel up, both heels up, and . . . pulses.” Thanks again.

  4. Robert Harden

Parkatola, That is “I think” the only one missing. :( I need to go back and get that one added. I bet you were disappointed at having to stop, so close. Once you get started back up, keep us posted, I always enjoy hearing the updates and progress reports!

  5. Parkatola

Thanks for the prompt reply. I’m in week 2 of month 2, and (hopefully) nothing will keep me from finishing this time. I’m doing a bunch of things differently this time. I workout in the morning rather than at night, I’m focusing more on the diet than I did last time, I’m really trying to include a recovery formula right after I exercise. It’s going well and I like being able to go home at the end of a long day and not having to work myself up for working out. Thanks again for the great reviews. I’ll have to look at your other reviews to see what I want to do if I don’t do Insanity again.

  6. Robert Harden

Feel free to email me as well, P90X is great mixed with Insanity, and if you don’t like pullups, Chalean Extreme mixed with Insanity is great too. We always have something. :)

  7. Mario

Robert, I just want to say thank you for your reviews of Insanity. I was very nervous as to starting the max workouts. I am 6’0, 255 lbs and I started at 280 lbs. I started the program with my best friend who has a similar body type and we decided we should repeat the first month since we felt we needed a real kick in the a** to prepare for the max. Today was my first day of Max which is this workout. I pushed harder than ever and felt good as I kept pushing as the people in the video took breaks. I definitely feel this month will render excellent results and my friend and I decided to also do the Max month twice, making insanity a 4 month program for us.

  8. Robert Harden

Mario! Awesome! I insist that you come back and comment and update us as you progress. I’m always happy to hear about the success others have with fitness programs we offer here at I am currently going through Insanity my 2nd time, and will start the MAX on Monday, next week!

  9. Don

I have just completed week 3. I started at a lean 162 and now weigh between 155 and 157. I challenge myself by taking less breaks each time, especially in pure cardio. My only concern is that my knees are feeling a little sore, particularly at the beginning of warm-up and next day. I wear good shoes, try to land softly, and take glucosamine supplement. Anyone else feel this too?

  10. Robert Harden

There is a LOT of jumping and impact on your knees in Insanity, as you have found out. What is your workout surface like? I personally use a mat, in addition to good shoes and trying to land softly. I recently completed another round of Insanity, and was noticing some knee issues. So I ordered some of Beachbody’s Joint Formula. it seemed to help as I no longer notice the soreness. You can check it out here. l like it better than plain glucosamine. Try a mat, if you have a hard surface too!

  11. Ryan

This is without a doubt, the hardest workout I’ve ever done in my life. I’ve done this four times so far, and if it wasn’t for all the supplements that I took I would’ve never made it through the first week of month 2. Its a fun workout, don’t get me wrong, but the first time you go through this, you’re fighting every one of your muscles for just 2 more seconds without collapsing. I looked at my Asylum calendar, and this workout is used frequently in the hybrid. This just keeps making it harder to dig deeper during these last 3 weeks. (I had to restart my first week, which is why I did it 4 times.)

  12. Matt

Your reviews are excellent! Thanks for doing this. I’m currently in the middle of Insanity and I’m the type of guy that likes to know what’s coming up. And thanks for being positive and supportive.

  13. Robert Harden

Matt – Thank you! Insanity is crazy hard, keep up the good work! Come back and let us know how you’re doing. If you need anything related to Beachbody, please consider shopping in our store,, we are authorized Beachbody retailers. Keep pushing play!

  14. Jessica

I just want to say that the insanity program really works. I’m pretty athletic but I wanted a program that would help me lose the extra weight I had gained during my pregnancy and tone me up fast. I haven’t dropped weight per se but I have really toned up. I am 9 weeks postpartum and will be starting month 2 on Monday. People can’t believe I was ever pregnant. Its AMAZING!!!!

  15. Robert Harden

Jessica. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I’m certain your comment will inspire and motivate others. Way to dig deep!

  16. nappytdy

    Hi Robert,
I am almost finished with this fabulous program with 1 week left. Today is Max Interval Circuit and I feel the excitement to do this just like the first day. It never gets better, it is still intimidating, but welcoming. Thanks for your reviews along the way.

  17. Robert Harden

nappytdy….. Congrats on sticking to the program! You have truly accomplished something amazing! This is a tough fitness program. I’m glad you found the reviews helpful!

  18. Nappytdy

    Thanks Robert.
It seems like the last two weeks are the toughest. I will not quit though.

  19. Victor

The first time I did this work out and saw the 59 minute mark on the clock… I was like oooooh my god… what the hell have I gotten myself into.

After a large mental black out, while my body was making the work out (while my mind was in lalaland), I noticed there were 10 minutes on the clock, then 5, then 0… and it was the BEST feeling ever!

This is definitely not a work out for everyone, but it WILL turn the goo into hard goo :D

  20. Robert Harden

You’re comments are appreciated, thank you. I’ll never forget seeing that timer for the first time either. Crazy!

  21. Marlene

I’m new to this and was just thinking of ordering the Insanity workout. When I went to beachbody’s web page to order, it listed two different workouts. The Insanity 60-day total conditioning and then the Max interval. I used to work out every single day for years, but unfortunately it has been about 4 years since I’ve been in the gym! So I don’t want to start out too strong and get discouraged.

So my question is, which of these two packages should I begin with? If the max interval is the same as the 60-day total body conditioning, but includes bonuses or something, then I’m all for it, but if I am going to be over my head in this then I wouldn’t want to start with the max.

  22. Robert Harden

Marlene, The Insanity workout has two phases, month 1 and month 2. The nonth 2 workouts are MAX workouts, they are harder than the month 1 workouts. So you will have 30 days to build up to the MAX workouts. Month 1 is still challenging. So you’ll want to take breaks as needed, and allow yourself some time to adapt. It’s okay if you don’t keep up at first. if they were too easy, it would not get the results as quickly. Don’t buy from the Beachbody website. I’m an authorized retailer and sell the exact same thing that you would get at Beachbody. But with me, I get to add in a exclusive bonus DVD called Fast and Furious. It’s a super quick workout when you’re crunched for time. Here’s my link for the bonus.

  23. Andrew

Excellent review,I burnt 980 calories after doing this workout, Shaun T was serious when he says he will kick you butt…damn.I would love to have 20 20 vision, but on doing max interval circuit am glad am short sighted, at least I don’t see the… This thing is tough, those drills! Lord have mercy, at one point I felt I was about the die, I could even hear the whistling my lungs were making pleading for Oxygen. I have now lost 40Ibs coming from 259. Thank you America for such an awesome program.greetings from chilly London.

  24. Robert Harden

Awesome Results Andrew! Keep up the workouts. 40 lbs, thats great!

  25. Derek in London

    Hi all

Well I’m two days off of the end of week 7 with 1 week to run max interval awaits today !
I used to run ultra marathons in my twenties I’m 48 now and boy oh boy I gotta say insanity is mentally tougher than running 52 miles :-) or is it me getting older ? Who knows but sure as anything the results speak for themselves .7 weeks ago people weren’t walkingr up to me and asking ” what workout you doing is there any chance I can get a loan”! So I’m guessing my results physiologically are a good advert for the workout .
Make no mistake though THIS WORKOUT IS BEYOND TOUGH ! It’s not for everyone which makes it kinda special when you do complete it .As Tony Horton says ” I don’t do age nooooo not me ! Don’t subscribe to it !” .The couch potato 20 year olds in my precinct have taken notice !!!! DIG DEEEEEEEPER people its ALLLLL GOOD ! peace out ;-)

  26. Robert Harden

    That’s awesome Derek! Great job!

years later.. after doing insanity (8yrs..) I’m glad this is still posted.. Im doing Insanity for the 2nd time and for some reason I still check the web to see what is expected out of me every time.. i do the workout again. For the 1st time
